Subject: Regarding your rant about Singlish and Chinese
*Gasp!* This post is not written by Raphael!! *Faints* Yes it's written by me, who decidedly decided to poke his overlarge nose into Raphael's blog. And furthur still *Gasp!* this post is gramatically and punctuation-wise correct!
(Applause from nodding English teachers)
While I agree with Raphael on some points that we should not be forced to learn Chinese just because China is quickly expanding and some, I disagree with him on other issues he mentioned, namely Singlish.
Raphael said that people claim that China is expanding, and hence to polish their apples we must buy polishers in the form of learning Chinese which must be perfect because we
are assholes must strive to keep up with their advance. However, during World War Two, why didn't everyone around the world started picking up German when Germany was winning? Why didn't the Chinese, Koreans, Ecuadorians, Uzbekistanis and Ouagadougouians pick up French when Napolean decisively conquered masses of the world?
4 words. Because they weren't idiots (technically, you can't start a sentence with the word 'Because' because 'Because' is a conjunction).
And that people say not respecting our language isn't respecting ourselves? Right, I'm
absolutely sure that by neglecting my mother tongue, I have been reduced to nothing but a wanton prostitute with no self-respect. Raphael, you go on from here.
However, right as Raphael may be in some of his claims, still aspersion must be cast on his statement that Singlish should be glorified (bet he does not know the meaning of 'aspersion'). Far from being original, Singlish is but a mish-mash, a scavenge of words from English, Chinese, Chinese dialect and Malay. Not very original is it? True, speak Singlish to your hearts content. I'll laugh hardest when your recipients reply with a "Huh??". Not quite what a language is supposed to do, right? A language, is meant to communicate (this means to speak and understand and be understood). If Singlish can't even meet such basic requirements,
screw it, I say.
